ROME WATERCOLOUR SERIES

February 10, 2020

In his spare time, alongside his work as a commercial artist, Gino enjoyed experimenting with watercolours. His ability to use this medium with the same confidence and skill as acrylic paint set him apart from his contemporaries.

Watercolour is a difficult medium to work with as due to its spontaneous nature it can be unpredictable and unforgiving. Yet Gino was a master of this medium too, harnessing the delicate luminosity of the transparency of watercolours to create compositionally outstanding scenes of his native Rome.

This watercolour depicts the famous local stray cats which, as anyone who has visited Rome knows, are an important and respected community in the eternal city.
